Maven Kalflar is a secondary character from The Severis Tales.
Biography
Maven Kalflar is a bipedal dragon who grew up with Mila Daruginna in poverty and economy-stricken Rale County in Caldore. Although her family resides there, she was not born in Rale.
Maven is a skilled fighter, having learned her skills from a martial artist in Rale who assisted those wanting to know self-defence. With her best friend Mila, they and their families struggled to survive.
After Mila took her opportunity to escape Rale, Maven stayed behind for a few more years, travelling about. Her love of pickled and preserved foods led her to moving south for an internship in Cambridge County a few years after Mila. Later on, she married William Chantrel, and with his help, founded Kalflar Farms, a company specializing in picked and preserved foods, which are enjoyed throughout South Caldore.
Eight years ago, in 1095, she encountered Xiveer Severis in a pub. She had to save him from Jergen Pret, who was within seconds of ending his life. She had no idea of his acquaintance with Mila at the time, and as they fled into the neighbouring county and went their ways, the opportunity for reunion then was lost.
However, by sheer coincidence, twenty years after she said goodbye to Mila, she finally reunited with her in Barlett while attempting to secure a single test contract in the north. Furthermore, she reunited with Xiveer at the same time.
Physical Description
Maven is a bipedal dragon. Like most bipedal dragons, they are not one-hundred-percent reptilian—they share much with their fleshy elven counterparts. She has scaly but soft blueish skin; blue, almond-shape eyes; long, dark brown hair she often keeps in a bun and under a hat; a tail, wings, and wears period dresses with slots to comfortably fit both.
Peronality and Habits
Before her "transformation" into the adult businesswoman she is today, Maven was crude, arrogant, and prone to starting fights. Since then, she has become stable, calm, professional, kind. She dislikes the use of violence; and when it does happen, she reflects negatively on herself, believing herself to be unworthy of all the work she did.
Maven also has some sort of seductive charm. It worked on Brackneed Vendyor during their meeting—it made him act in a way not usually seen by others. Mila speculates that, subconsciously, Maven reminds him of his late wife, Vasira.
Family and Relationships
Although her family never knew Mila's mother (or father, when he was still around), Maven considered Mila part of her family, and vice-versa. They were very close until they went their separate ways, but since reuniting, they can at least stay in touch with each other.
Because of her adventure with Xiveer in Rale, he is also considered a close friend. This caused problems during story #5, Eggs, when Leena misinterpreted his unusually friendly attitude toward her, causing her to think Maven had an affair with her husband; not to mention he never mentioned Maven to her before. This was cleared up after a small talk during contract negotiations, which ultimately caused the Severises to lose the bid, but she now understands their relationship. Maven welcomes her, as well, into her social circle.
